  3. Introduction Problem Faced by Law Enforcing Agencies • How to effectively analyze the data, which is necessary to identify, apprehend and prosecute suspect. Solution • GIS an effective tool to visualize, analyze and explain criminal activity.

Reducing Crime: Proactive Approach • Hot Spot identification using GIS • Hotspot analysis in relation to different factors such as population density, average income etc can be effectively done using GIS • Preventive action in Serial criminal as offender behavior is governed by geographic environment around him. Pattern matching

  6. Investigating Crime: Reactive Approach • Needs homicide experts, detectives, under cover officers, finger print analysis and pattern analysis of crime committed. Crimes can be divided in two main categories • Causal or Opportunistic crime • Professional Crime

  7. Causal or Opportunistic crime • Criminal Behavior primarily due to personal reason. • Easier for homicide experts and detectives to nab the culprits. • One or two sporadic crime event in isolated location hardly form a pattern, can well do without GIS

Professional Crime– Lead generation easier using GIS • Committed by organized gangs • Hardly leave any clue • Difficult for homicide expert and detective to generate the lead. • GIS can be a handy tool as offender behavior is likely to be consistent in time and geographic space. • Pattern in crimes can be easily identified by the use of GIS.
