The War on Poverty • First government-sponsored effort to involve poor African-Americans • Residents of poor neighborhoods placed in new jobs as day care workers, teacher aides, etc. • Head Start preschool offered for free in low-income neighborhoods • Education Act increased federal funding to colleges & provided low-interest student loans
