  4. STUDENT PORTFOLIOS So that you can see how your writing is improving over the course of the year. So I have samples of your writing and can show your parents how your writing is improving Portfolios is also where behavior forms are filed IF you receive one. You will receive your portfolio at the end of the year to review and take home.

  5. THE RECIPIENT’S (THE PERSON RECEIVING THE LETTER) ADDRESS • If the recipient has a simple house address it takes 3 lines • JOHN WAYNE • 234 OLD MOVIE LN • BOISE, ID 83704 • If the recipient’s address includes an apartment #, it can be placed on the same line as the street address or you can write it on its on line below the street address. • JOHN WAYNE JOHN WAYNE • 2345 COGBURN WAY, #501A OR 2345 COGBURN WAY • BOISE, ID 83704 #501A • BOISE ID 83704

  6. According to the US Post Office • 1. Addresses should be written in all capital letters • 2. States should be abbreviated • 3. Abbreviate the words • ROAD as RD STREET as ST • LANE as LN WAY as WY • DRIVE as DR BOULEVARD as BLVD .

  7. Getting the recipient’s address in the right spot can be tricky. An easy way to place the recipients address in the correct spotFind the horizontal center of the envelope. Make a tiny pencil line (really short). On that center line, measure in about 3 inches from the left edge. Make a tiny dot. Start the Recipients name on the second dot. • JOHN WAYNE • 234 OLD MOVIE LN • BOISE, ID 83704

  8. The Return Address The return address is the name and address of the person sending the letter. If something goes wrong, the letter will be returned to that address.

  9. After you have the recipients address & return address on the envelope, it is time to add the stamp. Postage stamps tell the Post Office that you have paid the amount needed to mail the letter. The stamp is placed in the upper right hand corner of the envelope.

  10. When the post office processes your letter they will mark the postage stamp with a POST MARK. The POST MARK accomplishes a couple of things: 1. It tells the post office that this stamp has been used and stops people from sending more than one letter using the same stamp. It tells the recipient the date that the sender mailed the letter. That way if the post office takes a long time to get the letter to the recipient the sender is not blamed. It identifies which post office processed the letter.
