Starter Question Identify the following types of reaction • CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2 (g) + 2H2O(l) • Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) → ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s) • 2AgO(s) → 2Ag(s) + O2(g) • CaCO3(s) → CaO(s) + CO2(g) • 2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(l) • HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) • KCN(aq) + HBr(aq) → KBr(aq) + HCN(g) • 2Fe(s) + 3Cl2(g) → 2FeCl3(s) You have 4 minutes after the final bell

  2. Balancing Equations and the Mole Think about the following equation 2NaHCO3→ Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O 1 1 1 This tells me that 2 moles of NaHCO3 decompose to produce 1 mole of Na2CO3, CO2 and H2O respectively Therefore the balancing numbers tell us how much of each substance we need.

  3. 2HCl + CaCO3→ CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O Q: If I had 4 moles of HCl how many moles of H2O would be produced √ A: 1. Look at the equation, is it balanced? 2. Look at the question which substances is it talking about, highlight them 3. Use the balancing numbers to determine the ration of molecules to each other 2HCl: 1H2O 4. Use the ratio’s to determine your answer 2HCl: 1H2O 4HCl: 2H2O

  4. 2HCl + CaCO3→ CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O Q: If I had 20g of CaCO3 how many moles of H2O are produced? A: 1. Calculate how many moles you have 1 mole CaCO3 = 100g 20g = x moles 20 x = = 0.2 moles 100 2. Now use your ratio’s to determine the answer 1 CaCO3 : 1 H2O 0.2 CaCO3 : 0.2 H2O

  5. 2HCl + CaCO3→ CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O Q: If I react 100g of CaCO3 with HCl. What mass of water is produced? A: 1. Calculate how many moles you have 1 mole CaCO3 = 100g 100g = x moles x = 1 mole 2. Now use your ratio’s to determine the answer 1 CaCO3 : 1 H2O 3. Next calculate the mass of that number of moles 1 mole H2O = 18g
