  3. Deuteronomy 6 : 4-7 4“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. 5And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

  4. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves • Eph. 5:22-25 • Wives submit to your husbands AS TO THE LORD • Husbands love your wives AS CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH AND GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR HER • Selflessness and Christ-centered love are the basis for a solid marriage

  5. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves • 10 Marriage Mistakes • Lack of Respect • Not listening to your spouse • Lack of sexual intimacy • Always having to be right • Not walking the talk

  6. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves • 10 Marriage Mistakes (cont.) • Hurtful teasing • Dishonesty • Being annoying • Being selfish or greedy • Having temper tantrums

  7. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves • Worldly VS. Godly marriage • What I can get from mate vs. what I can give to mate • What I like vs. what she/he likes • Me first vs. mate first • When I’m unhappy do us part vs. till death do us part • About externals/physical/fleshly vs. about internals/spiritual/godly

  8. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves A couple of questions to consider: • Are you helping your mate grow closer to God; or are you pushing them away from Him? • What are you learning from your marriage? About yourself? About God?

  9. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves One takeaway • Marriage is first about self-sacrifice and learning to relate to each other as closely as the son and the spirit and the father relate to each other in a loving intimacy • John 17:21I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

  10. We serve our mates on behalf of God, not to satisfy ourselves One Challenge: • For Marrieds: Do something completely selfless every day for your spouse. • For Singles: Pray for our marriages. Pray for yourspouse and marriage.
