  2. Baroque music was from 1600 to 1750. • There was elaborate detail and ornamentation. • The term baroque was given to the time period during the Classical era. • Baroque means imperfect pearl. • Many composers composed music for instruments alone.

Popular instrumental forms were sonata, concerto, toccata and fugue. • Showed contrast between different instruments, sections and levels of volume. • Popular stage music were opera, ballet and masque. • Popular dramatic choral works were cantatas and oratorios. • Many musicians earned a living as employees of churches, royalty or wealthy families. • The baroque period came to an end with the death of Bach.
