Plenary Feedback Morning Session: Strengths and Gaps
Morning Feedback • Strengths (Groups 1-5) • Location: bridge between Scotland, Europe and other cultures. • Involvement: appetite of schools and communities to be involved • Opportunity: range, variety and breadth of cultural strengths creates potential for CSR investment by companies • Distinctive: culture, identity & heritage • Awareness: Aberdeen has a global economic reputation and recognition
Morning Feedback • Strengths (Groups (6-10) • Cultural Community: willingness to collaborate, active participation, passion, creativity, cosmopolitan … but also the potential to develop further. • Local Traditions & Heritage: granite buildings, creative people and places. • Cultural Outputs: high-quality and wide range of stand-alone events / activities … but more can be done to co-ordinate and potential for greater focus.
Morning Feedback • Gaps (Groups 1-5) • Poor Connectivity: weak co-ordination, media coverage & communication • Cultural Hub: No central focus / ‘forum’ for people to “meet, talk & play” • Risk Aversion: no ‘can-do’ attitude • Support: for practitioners is limited • Structure/Mechanism: for joined-up thinking and democratic accountability • Private Sector: insufficient effort to engage business and lack of investment
Morning Feedback • Gaps (Groups 6-10) • Cultural Confidence: the ‘Schuh Test’ i.e. a lack of cultural confidence and diversity, unwillingness to experiment • Vision / Delivery: some saw the gap as a lack of vision, some as a gap between vision & delivery – all agreed that there was a lack of cultural catalysts • Profile of Culture: culture lacks a unified voice, has fragmented co-ordination, needs advocates and strong champions
Plenary Feedback Afternoon Session: Big Ideas
Afternoon Feedback • Big Ideas (Groups 1-5) • New Organisations / Networks • new body to support emerging talent – from inception to production • greater effort to harness opportunities and links with Europe – Aberdeen as a ‘gateway’ city + strong maritime and north sea links • New Partnerships • independent, advocacy body for regional arts / culture to provide vision and strategy • critical need for a regional approach
Afternoon Feedback • Big Ideas (Groups 1-5) • New Physical Spaces • Provide a contemporary hub for cultural activity, performance, history + admin • … or be experimental – how about shifting hubs, digitally linked and sharing culture • … and see the regeneration opportunities – e.g. Torry battery as a ‘gateway’ project • New Funding Mechanisms • strategy for existing corporate philanthropy • .. but also go further e.g. business arts levy
Afternoon Feedback • Big Ideas (Groups 6-10) • Infrastructure: • Multi-Purpose Hub: that can showcase local production, link City/Shire, build partnerships with industry/Universities etc • City Centre Regeneration: whatever form it takes, it needs to have culture at its heart. • Representative / Advocacy Body • Cultural Task Force: a unifying ‘vehicle’ for cultural representation, advocacy and ‘leadership’ (cultural ambassador) – paid staff, skilled (elected) reps + independent
Afternoon Feedback • Big Ideas (Groups 6-10) • BE BOLD … GO FOR IT • UNESCO World Heritage Site • Major New Museum e.g. Tate Aberdeen • UK City of Culture 2017 • Hijack the local media • Cultural Profile and Visibility • e.g. free entry to events in June • art/culture on every street, unused retail units • glow in the dark trees – be daring, be challenging • Mindset shift … be confident & ambitious
Afternoon Feedback • Headlines (P&J 2020) • “New City Council: • 100% Creative Thinkers” • “Aberdeen Politicians Thank Arts • for Saving the City” • “Aberdonians Give Unanimous Backing • to new Creative Strategy”
Panel Session Observations from the Panel
Panel Session • Cultural ambition needs to: • Harness economic development and enhance social cohesion; • Maximise participation and encourage ownership; • Build on Aberdeen’s distinctive location and unique identity; • Benefit both urban and rural areas; • Aid regeneration (e.g. the Torry battery idea).
Panel Session • Aberdeen at a cultural ‘tipping point’ – now is the time to secure a strong, viable future for culture in Aberdeen • 2017 seen as a catalyst project – a demonstration of ambition … • … could aim for something else to galvanise a 2017 bid ‘team’ e.g. Tall Ships, ‘Festival of the Sea’. • Aberdeen needs to see itself as being on a par with Edinburgh & Glasgow.
Panel Session • The pre-requisite for new funding mechanisms and infrastructure are new partnerships and new networks. • The cultural community needs to coalesce at a time of major opportunity and significant challenge. • Other cities – Scottish and international - have used culture to redefine themselves … we can too.
Panel Session • Strong support for an independent, representative body that can provide advocacy, vision and leadership “for the cultural sector, from within the cultural sector”. • AB+ group along with panel reps (PH, PS & GR) to work with cultural community, Universities and others to identify a suitable structure.
