  2. Citizenship • 1st Amendment - Free speech, Press, religion, Assembly, and to petition government • Notes: Freedoms are limited if they can cause harm to others. You cannot freely start a riot. You cannot yell fire in a movie theater and claim free speech. • All individual rights must be balanced with the good of the nation or community

  3. Conscientious Objector • A person opposed to war. When they are drafted into the military the question becomes how to protect their views of non-violence and that of killing in war. Personal rights verse Group rights. They are place in non-combat roles. Thus they are not killing and are serving the bigger group. The group benefits from their service in supply, food services or maintenance.

  4. Eminent domain • When the government take private property from people or businesses to build something for the common good of everyone. Example the new 665 interchange, the government took several properties and paid the owners a set amount of money. The owners did not wish to sell, Government took it for the common good of everyone in the community.

  5. Democracy Governments • All democracies change governments through elections using voting. KEY THEY USE ELECTIONS= PEACEFUL CHANGE

  6. Dictatorships and Absolute Monarchies • Change government Through force or revolution. They use military Force, Fear and Violence

  7. Peoples and SocietiesJim Crow Laws • Southern laws enacted to oppress freed Black slaves. They were designed to segregate whites and blacks. Example, white water fountains and separate water fountains for blacks.

  8. NAACP • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Purpose, to end segregation and discrimination against blacks. To provide colored people legal help and social equality for African Americans being discriminated against. (Most famous case: Brown v. Board of education)

  9. UFW • United Farm Workers. Purpose is to increase pay and Improve working and housing conditions for migrant workers

  10. NOW • National Organization of Women. Purpose is to increase awareness of women rights and promote politically, economically and socially women’s right issues.

  11. AIM • American Indian Movement. Purpose to get Government to correct past treaty violations and preserve Indian Culture
