Cilia and Flagella in Cell Structure

By:

Tim Potter & Lou Ruspi

cilia
Cilia
  • Small, hair like organelles used for locomotion
  • Only found in eukaryotic cells
  • Similar to eukaryotic flagella
flagella
Flagella
  • Larger/longer than Cilia, whip-like tail appearance
  • Three general kinds, Bacterial and Archaeal (corkscrew), and Eukaryotic (whip, similar to cilia)
  • Flagellum of male sperm is a modified cilium
diseases
Diseases
  • Ciliary defects can lead to a large variety of diseases
  • Primary Ciliary Diskenisia, Polycistic Kidney Disease, Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, ectopic pregnancy, and male infertility
question 1 what is a disease caused by cilia
Question 1What is a disease caused by Cilia
  • Androgenic Alopecia
  • Cholelithiasis
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • A & B
  • A & C
  • None of the above
question 2 how do cilia and flagella differ in locomotion
Question 2How do Cilia and Flagella differ in locomotion?
  • Some Flagella use corkscrew motions
  • Cilia must move in groups
  • All Flagella have hollow tubes, and use base “motors” to move
  • A and B
  • B and C
