  3. All your directories on a single platform • The Gale Directory Library is the cross-searchable modular platform that lets library users access all your directories in a single platform. • In this PowerPoint, you will find some sample searches that demonstrate the platform as well as a short overview of upcoming enhancements.

  4. A quick search… with Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies

  5. Ward’s Business Directory • Let’s say you want to search for a particular company. • Simply type in the company name and you will instantly find the record. The Gale Directory Library looks for variant names as well.

  6. Ward’s Business Directory • Note how the GDL platform lets the user browse an extensive set of fields, just as in the print volumes.

  7. Ward’s Business Directory • Users who have the optional backfile of Ward’s data can execute a single company search across multiple years of directory data. • Simply click “Include all available data” instead of limiting “to data from the current editions only” • Now the user can browse entries across time.

  8. Ward’s Business Directory • Clicking into the entry-level view lets users review the expanded data available, such as additional SIC and NAICS codes and listings of corporate officers.

  9. Some more searches… With the Encyclopedia of Associations

  10. Encyclopedia of Associations • To search an individual directory, select it on the Advanced Search page. • In this search example, the user is searching the Encyclopedia of Associations – National edition for entities related to the keyword “labor”

  11. Encyclopedia of Associations • The search yields 426 results from the 45th edition of Encyclopedia of Associations – National Edition. • However, the user might have a more refined search in mind. Clicking “Advanced Search” in the breadcrumb trail will return the user to Advanced Search but with the previous search criteria already there.

  13. Encyclopedia of Associations • Once the user is back at Advanced Search, he/she can further refine the search by limiting it to entities that are based in Michigan.

  14. Encyclopedia of Associations • The result is a tightly focused list of labor organizations that function at a National level and are located in the state of Michigan. • Repeat the search for labor organizations using the Encyclopedia of Associations – International or Regional, State and Local to find associations with an international focus or with a focus on a particular region, state or locality.

  15. Encyclopedia of Associations • Here are a few other searches for you to try: • Search all three Encyclopedia of Associations for the keyword “writing” that give awards. (Use theCtrl key to selectmultiple directoriesat the same time.)

  18. What about cross-searching different types of directories? With GDL, you can cross-search directories with different types of data, such as Ward’s and the Encyclopedia of Associations.

  19. Cross-search multiple directories • If a library purchases more than one directory on the Gale Directory Library then the user can cross-search those directories with ease. • For example, do a Basic Search by keyword for “venture capital”

  20. Cross-search multiple directories • In this case, the Gale Directory Library is loaded with both Ward’s Business Directory all three versions of the Encyclopedia of Associations, and it retrieves entries from all of the directory titles.

  21. Cross-search multiple directories • The Advanced Search screen lets users choose the specific directory, or directories, they want to search. (Use Ctrl to select multiple directories.) • The fields are displayed for searching that are specific to the directory shown. • If multiple directories are chosen, then the fields they share in common are available for searching.

  22. 25. Coming soon to the GDL platform! • SIC and NAICS browse with a hierarchical multi-select box. • No more clicking from page to page to look up SIC and NAICS codes. The hierarchical browse lets you navigate the natural structure of the SIC and NAICS systems.

Related subject terms along the left-hand side of the results list help users take better advantage of the controlled vocabulary in their search.
