  2. Definition: • Hearing impairment is a term used to describe disordered hearing, (Mild moderate, severe, profound) • Hearing sensitivity loss is a type of hearing impairment • The term deaf refers to type of loss where the sense of hearing is non- functional for ordinary purposes

  3. Possible Causes: • Congenital • Acquired

  4. Prevalence or Incidence Rates: • An estimated one half million Americans have severe to profound hearing loss • 14% of the adult population claim “a little trouble” hearing • 3.4% claim “a lot of trouble” hearing or are “deaf”

  5. Assessment: • Cognitive • Adaptive behavior and social-emotional • Developmental / Criterion based scales • Academic / Readiness

  6. Characteristics: • Infants • Intelligence • Speech and Language • Social development

  7. Instructional ideas: • General courtesy • Strategies if: • The student lip-reads • The student uses an interpreter • Writing materials for the student • Testing

  8. Technology Used With the Disability: • TTY • Subtitles / captions • Cell phones • Internet!! • Telecommunications relay service

  9. Other Interesting Information: • The term Deaf, used with a capital D refers to those who want to be identified with the deaf culture. • Conversation occurs at around 60(dB) and damage can occur at around 130(dB) • 0.11% school-age population,around 30% age 65+ population.
