  1. B(u)y the Book! • Course: Compiler Construction • Open Book Examination • Open Book Exam Assignments in advance • Aspects • expected advantages • expected disadvantages • what really happened! DFR/B(u)y the Book

  2. Exam: Expected Advantages • Shift the focus • from remembering facts & terminology by heart • to learning through use (more realistic) • Students would read the book • By the exam, students would be able to “navigate” through the book • i.e. they would know where to find information DFR/B(u)y the Book

  3. Exam: Expected Disadvantages • “copying” verbatim from the book in the exam answers • the expectation that serving up “facts” in an exam answer would be sufficient DFR/B(u)y the Book

  4. Exam: What really happened! • Students did copy/translate directly • Some students brought a “mini-library” to the exam (5-6 books + notes) • Students did not know how to use a book as a tool • use of the table of contents / subject index • Implications of open book exams DFR/B(u)y the Book

  5. Exam: Issues • Open book exams are more demanding • Reading is confused with learning • Different expectations: student/teacher • Inability to answer essay type questions • inexperience? • problems constructing a 3-5 page answer • is this a cultural difference? age? DFR/B(u)y the Book

  6. Exam: What next? • Is requiring “understanding” in 10 weeks unreasonable? • Give this presentation to the students! • Be 100% explicit (as far as possible) • Are “implicit” questions unfair? • Post a facit on the web (example answers) DFR/B(u)y the Book

  7. Advantages independent study of a section of the book encourages own responsibility for learning more time to prepare the assignment fewer questions in the exam (50% of course) Disadvantages last-minute preparation < 50% mark gives a return - delays reporting exam result extra administration - for resit exams higher teacher expectations for the result Open Book Exam Assignments DFR/B(u)y the Book

  8. Exam Assignments: What next? • To continue or not? • Better communicate the advantages • Go back to just exam + lab • New variant • 40p exam • 10p optional IFF assignment handed in by the deadline DFR/B(u)y the Book
