  1. UW-GIS list-serve http://gis.washington.edu/uw_gis_l/index.html http://gis.washington.edu

  2. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data • DRG

  3. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data • DRG

  4. Importing data: ArcInfo interchange file (.E00) • ArcInfo format • Very common file format for movement of data • Known as “interchange,” “export,” or “E00” file • Solves ArcInfo file system problem for data sharing • Easy to transfer from machine to machine or across file system; easy to distribute via the Network • Can be imported to ArcMap

  5. Importing data: ArcInfo file structure Files associated with an ArcInfo coverage some of these files are associated with this data set

  6. Importing data: ArcInfo file structure • Problematic file structure for file management • Directories for ArcInfo data sets cannot be altered, copied, or moved arbitrarily • Interchange file “packages” the coverage directory and info files into a single file • Interchange file can be copied or moved and then imported • Importing recreates original file structure

  7. Importing data: ArcInfo file structure: ArcToolbox

  8. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data • DRG

  9. ArcInfo generate file ASCII coordinates in formatted file created by ArcInfo Workstation

  10. ArcInfo generate file Imported with ArcCatalog

  11. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data (*.ddf) • DRG

  12. Importing data: SDTS files • Spatial Data Transfer Standard • Publicly available data sets • Distributed by USGS in SDTS file format • USGS digital elevation model (DEM) data • USGS digital line graph (DLG) vector data

  13. Importing data: SDTS files: USGS DEM data Imported with ArcToolbox

  14. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data • DRG

  15. Importing data: SDTS files: USGS DLG data • Digital Line Graph (DLG) • Vector format data • Publicly available data sets • Distributed in SDTS file format • ArcInfo Workstation needed for full conversion of SDTS to GIS data sets

  16. limited attributes Importing STDS DLG • ArcToolbox import

  17. DLG to ArcInfo coverage Use ArcInfo Workstation for a full conversion

  18. DLG to ArcInfo coverage Fully converted data set has full attribute coding

  19. Overview • Importing data • ArcInfo interchange file • ArcInfo generate file • Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) files • USGS DEM (raster) data • USGS DLG (vector) data • DRG

  20. DRG • Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) • USGS topographic quadrangles • Scanned • Georeferenced • TIFF format

  21. DRGDigital Raster Graphic

  22. Homework Read: “Data Sources” and “Data Import” Start: Assignment 8
