  4. 1.3K MARRIAGE Summarize facts 1st Marriage was a community event. Ministers performed marriages. Then make some inferences and put information together Not as formal as today. Groom is happier. Look at the picture. Now let’s listen to The song

  5. When I was single, when dressed all so fine Now I am married Lord, tho’ ragged all the time Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

  6. Dishes to wash and springs to go to When you are married Lord, you’ve got it all to do Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

  7. When I was single, my shoes they did squeak, Now I am married Lord, my shoes they do leak, Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

  8. Three little children, all lying in the bed All of them so hungry Lord, they can’t raise up their head Lord don’t I wish I was a single girl again.

  9. I wash their little feet and send them to school, Then comes the drunkard, calls them a fool, Lord I wish I was a single girl again

  10. When I was single I eat biscuit and pie, Now I am married Lord, it’s cornbread or die, Lord I wish I was a single girl again!

What inferences can we make about marriage during Colonization? • Depended upon where you were but all were expected to marry: Quakers most free! • Husband was master; little property rights for women. • The richer the woman, the less freedom she had. • Overall, many women were unhappy once they married because they were less well off.
