  2. In 1723 Benjamin Franklin got off a boat into Philadelphia. • With nothing but clothes in his pockets. • He ran away from his brother in Boston because of his brother’s temper. • He walked into a Quaker meeting house, and fell asleep.

  3. Benjamin became a printer’s assistant • Within a few years, he had saved enough money to open up his own printing shop. • “Poor Man Richard’s Almanac” was an almanac that he wrote. • Almanac- A book published annually containing weather predictions(sunsets and planting advice for farmers) • Wise words- “A penny saved is a penny earned” “ Early to bed, Early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise”

  4. He retired when he was forty-two • Benjamin Franklin had such good luck with his printing shop. • He actually wrote “Poor Man Richard's Almanac” But no one ever knew. • He went from a runaway to a wealthy printer.

  8. Living on a farm • Start working when the sun rises. (early) • Work is divided so everyone has to do some sort of work. • Chores- cutting wood, feeding animals, clearing land, tending crops, building fences, making furniture and tools, gathering eggs, spinning thread, weaving clothes, sewing clothes, making candles and soap, cooking, cleaning, and caring for babies/ small children.

  9. Nine out of ten people lived on small farms. • They made everything they needed. • The hardest thing the farmers had to do was clearing the farming land because of the trees. • The farmers used the same tools for clearing land as they did for building.

  10. Cooking • The colonists used heavy iron pots to do their cooking. • Women usually did all of the cooking. • The women usually scorched their clothes, were burned by the pot or fire, or strainedtheir back. • This job was very dangerous.

Housing in the colonies • The houses were one big room with a chimney • There was one big bed in the corner for the parents to sleep in. • The younger kids slept in the trundle bed and the older kids slept in the attic/loft. Trundle: A small bed that slides in and out from underneath the parents bed.
