Comprehensive Assessment for Autistic Student with Language and Behavioral Challenges

This case study involves administering a reading assessment to a student diagnosed with autism who exhibits aggressive behavior and struggles with language and attention. Despite rapport-building efforts, the student displayed agitation, refusal to engage with reading material, and aggressive behavior towards the examiner. The assessment revealed word recognition errors, extreme fidgeting, and verbal resistance. The study highlights the challenges of assessing students with autism and behavioral difficulties in an educational setting.

  2. Background • Aleric has been diagnosed as having autism • Child is subject to aggression and tantrums • Behavior is unpredictable • Native language is English • Extremely verbal • Can articulate, with uneven accuracy

  3. Nature of the Problem • Sensory, language, attentional, behavioral, motor, and academic difficulties • Difficulty encoding words • Expressive syntax and grammar weak • Difficulty with decoding • Difficulty blending the last sound of words

  4. Preparation for Administration • Rapport had been developed with the student • Elicited agreement from student to administer • Test presented to student as something fun

  5. Administration • Word Lists • Started with lists 2 years below current grade level • Current grade level is 3rd grade • Behavior • Student looked at words but refused to read them • Student grew restless and distracted • Student became agitated • Student did not respond to direction

Administration, continued • Student responded only when administrator pointed to word and pronounced it • He did repeat the words after they were pronounced • Word lists were administered from first grade/preprimer through third grade • Student behavior increasingly agitated and distracted • Upon beginning fourth grade list, student became agitated and burst out of seat at the end

  7. Oral Reading Passage • Student able to read very few words on his own • Examples of words easily read: • A, library, to, the, since, favorite, thing, do, read • Ability to repeat words not an indicator of his reading ability or comprehension

  8. Word Recognition Errors • Substitutions: 43.5 • Mispronunciations: 3 • Words Pronounced by Examiner: 23

  9. Manner of Reading • Fidgeting: Extreme • Other: Extreme • Student repeatedly crumpled up the paper he was reading from, and ultimately ripped it • Student repeatedly whined that “he didn’t want to do it” • Student got aggressive and kicked examiner in the ankle during administration • Student was aggressive to examiner after the reading
