  2. Establish a rapport • Make student feel comfortable • Explain the IRI to put student at ease • Stress that it is not a test for a grade • Let the student know it is to allow you to get to know how they read

Word Recognition Inventory Preparation • Begin 2 grade levels below current level • Make word lists at least 3 grade levels above/below on index cards Administration • Work away from other students • Explain procedure • Use index/flash cards • Keep a record of correct/incorrect responses ( check mark with +/-) • Continue with WRI until student misses 4 or more words at any level • Start the Oral Reading at the highest level where student made no errors

Oral & Silent Reading Passages Oral Reading • Begin at highest reader level with no errors • Teacher introduces passage • Student reads passage • Teacher records any errors • If student reads at independent or instructional level – ask comprehension questions (check mark if correct, record answer if incorrect) Silent Reading • Student reads passage without being able to review it first • Teacher asks comprehension questions (check mark if correct, record answer if incorrect) **Move on to next level for Oral Reading until student reaches his/her frustration level**

Listening Capacity Test • Determines comprehension by listening • Teacher can gauge student’s ability to listen • Can identify those students who understand better through listening than reading • Teacher can better plan for student • Given when frustration level is approaching • Evaluated same way as oral/silent reading

  7. Why the IRI ? • Know student’s strengths/weaknesses • Determines students reading level • Matches the student to the books he/she is able to read
