  1. Photosynthesis

  2. Learning Target: I CAN: (LT 4)Explain the process of photosynthesis (LT 5)Explain the formula for photosynthesis (LT6)Compare the process of respiration to photosynthesis

  3. All Cells Need Energy! • Animal cells get energy from food • Plants get energy from sunlight ** All cells use CHEMICAL ENERGY! Chemical Energy is energy stored in the bonds between atoms of every molecules.

  4. Energy Source A major energy source for most cells is stored in a sugar molecule called GLUCOSE. C6H12O6

  5. Some Cells Capture Light Energy

  6. What is Photosynthesis? Definition: It is the process that plant cells use to change energy from sunlight into chemical energy. ** Photosynthesis only takes place in plants that have chloroplast

  7. What are chloroplasts? Organelles in a plant cell that contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a light-absorbing pigment, or colored substance, that traps the energy in sunlight.

  8. What is needed for Photosynthesis? • Carbon Dioxide • Water • Light Energy • Chlorophyll

  9. 3 Main Steps in Photosynthesis Step 1: The starting materials Step 2: The Process Step 3: The products

  10. Step 1: The Starting Materials The starting materials are: * Carbon Dioxide * Water The plant takes in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and water (H20) from the soil. ** Goes straight to the chloroplasts**

  11. Step 2: The Process Takes place when carbon dioxide and water enter the plant’s chloroplasts. Chlorophyll captures energy from sunlight, which is used to change CO2 and H20 into new products

  12. Step 3: The Products of photosynthesis are oxygen and sugars such as glucose. The plant releases most of the oxygen to the air as a waste product and keeps the glucose for its energy needs.

  13. EQUATIONFORPHOTOSYNTHESIS WATER OXYGEN 6CO2 + 6H2O + ENERGY C6H12O6+ 6O2 CARBON DIOXIDE GLUCOSE

  14. RespirationA series of chemical reactions that breaks down food molecules (glucose) energy.

  15. Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cell.

  16. Chemical Equation of Respiration (aerobic – with oxygen)

  17. Putting it all together!
