  14. The Somme – Western Front Pozieres is located in the middle of the Somme on a high point and of great military importance as you could see enemy. The British in one day alone suffered 60,000 casualties. The Anzacs relieved the British and captured the ridge line on 4 August 1916. One out of every two Anzacs who fought here at the Somme became a casualty.

  20. Soldier Settlement Application Gilgandra means “long water hole” and the Castlereagh River runs behind the current main street - a plentiful, permanent water source. Farming is the basis for Gilgandra’s economy (2006). Sheep have been grazed for wool production since 1830. The first wheat was grown in the 1860s at first only on a small scale.
