Who Was Andrew Jackson • 7th President of U.S. • Born near border of North & South Carolina in 1767 • Father died before he was born • He served in American Revolution & War of 1812 • 2 brothers & mother died as a result of the American Revolution • On his own at 14 yrs. old • Married Rachel & settled on a plantation (Hermitage) in Nashville, TN • A controversial individual

How Did Andrew Jackson Earn the Nickname “Old Hickory”? • He was appointed the major general of the Tennessee militia in the War of 1812 • February 1813 - He and his troops were sent to New Orleans for a British invasion. • The invasion never transpired, so he was ordered back to Nashville (no one received pay).

  11. Earning the Nickname “Old Hickory” • First, he refused to disband. • Short on money and supplies, he walked along side of his men the entire 500 miles of wilderness back to Nashville. • His courage and determination earned him the nickname “Old Hickory” from his men.

How did Andrew Jackson Become a Hero? • Andrew Jackson served in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 • Now…in War of 1812, there were 2 large groups of Native Americans called the Creeks & Cherokees • Creeks helped the British during the war of 1812 • Cherokees helped the Americans fight against the Creeks • Andrew Jackson led his soldiers against Creeks • In March 1814, Creeks lost an important battle in Alabama (The Battle of Horseshoe Bend) & surrendered to Andrew Jackson • As a result, Creeks had to give most of their land in Alabama & Georgia to Americans in the East • Americans praised Andrew Jackson as a HERO for his war efforts & for gaining the land in Alabama & Georgia
