  3. Thesis Statement • Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers uses believable characters, themes of development, and a realistic setting to accurately portray a soldier's role/life in the Vietnam War.

Main Characters • Richie: Narrator • Johnson: A large black man from Georgia who joined the army because there was nothing in the world for him to do. • Peewee Gates: a high school dropout from Chicago who joined the army because a background of profound poverty and the kind of life he left behind

  5. Walter Dean Myers • Born on August 12,1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. • His mother died when he was 3 years old. • He moved in with a foster family in Harlem. • He dropped out of school at the age of seventeen to join the army.
