  1. TOPIC: Nervous System Aim: Identify the two divisions of the nervous system. Do Now: Practice questions (NEXT SLIDE) HW: Lab due tomorrow!!!

  2. A A F C • What does this diagram represent? • Identify all labeled structures. D B E

  3. How is the nervous system divided?

  4. 1. Central Nervous System – made up of interneurons 2. Peripheral Nervous System

  5. Parts of the Brain (Medulla)

  6. Cerebrum: largest part

  7. Cerebrum: largest part memory, thinking, speech thought, senses

  8. 2. Cerebellum: COORDINATION and BALANCE

  9. 3.Medulla Oblongata: controls involuntary activities

  10. Breathing, heartbeat, digestion, blood flow

  11. Spinal Cord Carries impulses to and from brain Controls reflexes

  12. How is the CNS protected?

  13. Cranium: Protects the brain • Spinal Column: protects spinal cord • Made up of vertebrae with disks of cartilage in between

  14. http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/flash/comic.html

  15. Peripheral Nervous System

  16. Nerves that branch off the brain & spinal cord • Made up of sensory neurons and motor neurons

  17. Sensory neurons Receptor Motor neurons

  18. Path of an impulse through the body • Receptor • Sensory neurons • Interneurons (CNS) • Motor neurons • Effector

  19. Why are reflexes faster than a normal response?

  20. SPINAL CORD CNS PNS Sensory neuron Motor neuron PNS

  21. Impulse does not travel to the brain • Only to the spinal cord

  22. DID YOU KNOW? There are approximately 100 billion neurons in the human brain. The average brain weighs about 3 pounds.

  23. DID YOU KNOW? There are about 3 million miles of axons in the human brain. The human brain has 100 trillion synaptic connections.

  24. Did you know… The human brain alone consists of about a 100 billion neurons. If all these neurons were to be lined up, it would form a 600 mile long line. As we get older, the brain loses almost one gram per year. In humans, the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, while the left side of the brain controls the right side.

  25. There are about 13, 500,00 neurons in the human spinal cord. An average adult male brain weighs about 1375 grams. An average adult female brain is about 1275 grams. Only four percent of the brain's cells work while the remaining cells are kept in reserve.

  26. Review: • Explain the difference between the CNS and the PNS. • What kind of neurons makeup the CNS? • What kind of neurons makeup the PNS? • Identify the part of the brain being described: • Controls heart rate • Regulates balance • Controls memory • Regulates breathing rate • Controls thinking • Controls balance

  27. Review: Identify the type of neurons described. 1. Carry impulse from receptors to the CNS system. 2. Carry impulses to the effectors. 3. Only found in the brain and spinal cord. 4. Carry impulses away from sense organs. 5. Connects sensory and motor neurons.
