  1. Disappearance of the Okapi

  2. What is an Okapi?? • An Okapi is giraffidartiodactyl mammal that lives in the Lturi Rainforest, found north east of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo. The Okapi looks like a zebra and a donkey mix, even though it is actually related to the giraffe because of their similarities. *Long blue tongue & lobed canine teeth. *skin covered horns or ossicones • *they walk at a pace. They simultaneously step with the front and hind leg on the same side of the body rather than moving alternate legs on either side like other ungulates. (Denverzoo.org)

  3. What is happening?????

  4. Issue 1 POACHING • People are poaching the okapi for meat and its fur. • Regardless of the okapis status of living, Poachers will not stop hunting this animal until it is wiped out. ( more rare the animal is, it is worth more money)

  5. Issue 2 Deforestation and loss of habitat • Deforestation is making there be less area for the okapi to live • Okapis usually live by themselves or with their babies (mom), they cant live with other okapis otherwise they will fight.

  6. Endangerment and even extinction. The Okapis current status is threatened due to the issues it has to face. Who would want to kill this?????

  7. What can we do to help???

  8. Cut down less Rainforests Breed/keep in captivity until the population has risen Cutting down less of the Lturi Rainforest can help the Okapi because it will still have a place to live This might help the population of the Okapi increase.
