  2. African Unicorn discovered • The okapi is a beautiful, majestic, and unusual animal. • The okapi is the only living relative to the giraffe! • The okapi has the head of a giraffe, the body of a horse, and the legs of a zebra.

  3. Physical characteristics • Okapis have 14 in.blue-blacktongues. • Okapis are (at average) 5-6 ft. tall, 7-8 ft. long, and 450-550 lbs. • females are usually bigger than males. • Male okapis have 2 fuzzy horns on the front of their heads.

The okapi environment • In the wild the okapi only lives in two places, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Ituri forrest. • Okapis live at high altitudes from 1500 to 3300 ft. where the days are warm and the nights are cool. • Each okapi has a home range the space where it lives and looks for food.

  6. Food and Behavior • Okapis eat ferns, leaves, fruits, fungi, and manioc. • Okapis have a special gland on their hooves that releases a scented wax like substance. • Okapis communicate with each other with a chuff sound, when an okapi is in danger it may bleat.

  7. Why am I endangered?? • Okapis are highly endangered mainly due to habitat destruction. • Poachers hunt and kill okapis to sell their skin and meat at bush markets. • Okapis are rarely killed due to natural disasters.

  8. Conservation efforts • One of the plans that help protect the okapi is the species survival plan. • In 1992 the Okapi Wildlife Reserve was created. • Zoos are breeding okapis to increase population.

  9. Conclusion All animals should be saved from extinction because all animals are living beings that deserve to live just as much as we do. All plants and animals have secrets waiting to be discovered. If one animal Dies off many others die too due to a chain reaction. (what if a reactions destroys the HUMAN population.)

  10. Fast facts • An okapi is pregnant for 15 months. • The main okapi predator is the leopard. • There are only 20,000 okapis alive on earth today, maybe less!
