  2. Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere • Japan under the dictatorship of Emperor Hirohito desired to create an empire for more land and natural resources.

  3. Japan began by invading Manchuria, the US opposed Japanese expansion in East Asia.

  4. Japan continued to expand the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. • Diplomatic relations became strained.

  5. The US froze all trade with Japan. • The US froze all Japanese assets. • The US began to build a 2 ocean navy and fortify our bases in the Pacific

  6. The Plan • Admiral Yamamoto devised a plan to attack the US at Pearl Harbor. • Training and planning took close to 1 year.

  7. Yamamoto knew the attack would be successful, but the lack of natural resources would be the eventual downfall of the Japanese empire.

  8. While the Japanese fleet sailed toward Hawaii, the US continued to negotiate with Japan for the withdrawal of Japanese forces in Manchuria and China.

  9. Peace talks broke down in November, the attack was planned for December.

  10. 7:55am Sunday Dec. 7 1941 • The Japanese planes flew over the island towards the harbor.

  11. Battleship Row • Our commanders had lined up our ships and planes in neat rows. Easy for maintenance, easy target for attack.

  12. The attack lasted about 1 ½ hours, in all • 2400 lives were lost • 1177 on the USS Arizona -395 enlisted men + 20 officers aboard the USS Oklahoma • 1178 wounded • 21 ships damages/destroyed • 8 battle ships • 300 planes damaged/destroyed • But the most important part: The aircraft carriers were NOT at Pearl Harbor.
