Main Functions of the R.S. • Works with the skeletal and muscular systems as you breathe • Works with the circulatory system to circulate oxygen and take back/release carbon dioxide • Internal versus External Respiration: • ER: exchange of gases between atmosphere & blood • IR: exchange of gases between cells and the blood

  3. Lungs • This is the site of gas exchange between the atmosphere and the blood • Each side of your lung: left and right • Each left or right side is divided into lobes • 2 lobes on each side of our lungs

  4. The Path of Air • Main path of air: atmosphere (air outside) to the capillaries in the lungs • Outline the Organs/Structures that helps us breathe: Mouth Nose Pharynx (fair-incs) Larynx (lair-incs) Bronchi (bron-k-hi) Bronchioles (bron-key-oles) Alveoli (al-vee—oh-lie)

  5. Regulation of Breathing • Brain and the brain stem work to control/monitor the amounts of carbon dioxide in the blood • The rate at which oxygen is used depends on the activity of the cells. The greater their activity, the more oxygen they need and the faster the body needs to breathe. The slower their activity, the slower the body needs to breathe. Both rate and depth of breathing change in order to provide oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide.
