  2. 1970: President Nixon signed a bill banning cigarette advertising on radio and TV • The Odd Couple, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Flip Wilson Show-sitcoms debuted

  3. Children’s shows: Josie and the Pussycats (animated forerunners of bands like The Go-Gos and The Bangles) • The Partridge Family: sitcom about a family that decided to form a rock band. “I Think I Love You”- David Cassidy eldest son and lead singer, teen heart throb

  4. 1971: The Flip Wilson Show- he dressed up in drag, played a female character, Geraldine • All in the Family: bigoted, lower middle class worker Archie Bunker

  5. Sanford and Son: almost as popular as All in the Family, many felt Redd Fox’s character perpetuated too many stereotypes of blacks • Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour: people wanted to see what Cher would be wearing

  6. 1972: The Waltons: rural family living in the Depression era • The Bob Newhart Show: comedy, a psychiatrist and his patients

  7. 1973: People watched Watergate coverage • May 17-Nov 17: three networks split live broadcasts of the hearings during the day. PBS aired taped highlights in evenings

  8. Schoolhouse Rock: cartoon broadcast Saturday mornings • Aloha from Hawaii: Elvis Presley- broadcast to over 1 ½ billion viewers on April 4

  9. 1974: Happy Days- comedy set in the late 50’s, early 60’s • Ron Howard, Henry Winkler (the Fonz) • Good Times: Dy-no-mite! • Rhoda: spin off of Mary Tyler Moore Show

  10. Little House on the Prairie: Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, pioneer family in the 1870’s

  11. 1975: The Jeffersons came out • Barney Miller: violence free cop show • Baretta: Robert Blake talked with his pet cockatoo

  12. Laverne and Shirley: Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams- Happy Days spin off • Muppets: Jim Henson

  13. The Gong Show: bottom of the barrel entertainment- talent show with celebrity judges who would rap on a large gong • The Boy in the Plastic Bubble: ABC Friday Night Movie with John Travolta in it- because a teen heartthrob afterwards

  14. 1976: Charlie’s Angels: detectives Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett-Majors: idols of millions of young girls, feathered hair • Wonder Woman: Lynda Carter • Alice: widowed mother and waitress

  15. Fawcett Majors decided to leave Charlie’s Angels after a year- her replacement was Cheryl Ladd- who became as popular • Three’s Company: Suzanne Somers

  16. The Love Boat • CHiPS: action series starring Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox as California Highway Patrolmen • Roots: Alex Haley’s best selling book about his search for his African ancestors- 8 part series, year’s highest rated television event

  17. 1978: • Fantasy Island • The Incredible Hulk- Lou Ferrigno • Diff’rent Strokes: Gary Coleman • Mork and Mindy: Robin Williams played an alien from Ork, said “Shazbut!” and “Na-Nu, Na-Nu” • Taxi: bizarre Andy Kaufman • WKRP in Cincinnati: radio station sitcom

  18. Dallas: highest rated nighttime soap opera since Peyton Place- about two Texas oil families- Larry Hagman was JR Ewing

  19. 1979: Trapper John, M.D. • Archie Bunker’s Place: shifted the show from his house to his bar • Knots Landing: soap • The Facts of Life

  20. The Dukes of Hazzard: action comedy starred Tom Wopat and John Schneider as Luke and Bo Duke, Daisy was their cousin with the short shorts, Sorell Brooke was their nemesis “Boss” Hogg, their car chases featured their ’69 Dodge Charger “General Lee”
