  1. Welcome to Mrs. Layson’s On-Level Math Class!!!!!

  2. A little bit about me…… • This is my 4th year at CHMS • I am originally from DeLand, FL (20 miles west of Daytona Beach) • I went to the University of Central Florida…go Knights!!!!

  3. A little bit about me…… • This past summer, I went to Helen, GA to celebrate my 1st anniversary with my husband Al, the love of my life!

  4. A little bit about me…… • My hobbies include: going to the theatre, acting, watching old movies, latch hook, playing tennis, exercising, and traveling • My favorite food is chocolate • I am very dramatic and animated in my teaching hence, I’m going to be heading up the Drama Club this year!

  5. Dealing with Data Patterns & Relationships Rational Reasoning Flip, Slide, & Turn Staying in Shape Values that Vary Slices and Shadows What are we going to learn about?

  6. Materials Required • Pencils—NO pens will be allowed • Erasers • Loose leaf notebook paper • 1 three-inch binder—CHMS is on a 1 binder system for all subjects • NO calculators will be used since they are not allowed on the CRCT Recommended • Pencil sharpener with lid---2 pencil sharpeners will be provided in the classroom, but may not be available at all times for use • Tissue Boxes for classroom use would be appreciated : ) • Hand Sanitizer for classroom use would be appreciated : ) • Individual wrapped pieces of candy would be appreciated : )

  7. Classroom Rules • Be prepared. • Follow all directions the first time they are given. • Participate positively in all class work and activities. • Treat yourself, others, and all property with respect. • Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.

  8. Team 7-1 Consequences • Verbal Warning • Silent Lunch – 10 max for the year • At Home Detention – 3 max for the semester • At School Detention – 3 max for the semester • Office Referral * The consequence given will depend on the level of the offense.

  9. The Layson Luminary Card Those students who follow the rules or show outstanding academic and/or behavioral improvement will receive a punch or punches on their card. 10 punches = one of the following rewards: • 2 passes (free homework pass or 5 extra points on a test or quiz pass) • 6 pieces of candy • 1 pass and 3 pieces of candy.

  10. What to do upon arriving in my classroom? • Enter my classroom quietly. • Sharpen your pencils before class or right at the beginning (you will not sharpen pencils while I’m teaching!) • Sit in your assigned seat and get out your homework from the previous school day • If you were absent, get out the work from the last day you were at school and go to the calendar and copy down what you missed into your agenda. • Copy down the agenda message • Work on your CATS

  11. First 5 minutes of class • These minutes are mine!!!! • I am on a mission to: • check your homework (I do this while you’re copying down the agenda message) • stamp your agendas (I do this while you’re completing the CATS assignment) • Do not interrupt me unless the building is on fire or someone is dying! • Do not ask me or your neighbor what the homework assignment is that I’m checking…use your agenda that’s what it’s for!

  12. When I’m teaching • Give me your full attention • Raise your hand to ask a question. • Please, please ask questions!!!!!!! • Do Not talk, get up, or sharpen your pencil. • Do Not fall asleep • If you fall asleep, you will jog in place in the back of the room until I tell you to stop.

  13. Last 5 Minutes of Class • This is not chat or play time!!!! We work from bell to bell. • Get started on your homework. • Ask questions!!!! • I dismiss you, NOT the bell!!!! • When I dismiss you: • Gather up your belongings, especially those under your seat. (at the end of the day, left items will be taken to the lost and found and AR books will be taken to the Media Center) • Make sure you have the homework assignment (worksheet) before you leave!

  14. Make Up Work • When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get the assignments they missed from either the back of the classroom or from my school-in-sites page. • Make-up work is due no later than 1 week from when the student returns to school (exceptions to this are at the end of a grading period).

  15. Reminders • Silly Bands and Rubber bands are NOT allowed to be worn at school…..leave them at home! • Gum and Candy are NOT allowed! • Boys, tuck in your shirts! • POD bathrooms are limited to 4 people at a time…make sure you have a pass • 5 minutes in between classes

  16. CATS (Class Activity to Start) 10% • CATS is the easiest grade to get in my class because all you have to do is Try and Correct • Follow directions • Spinner determines who gives the answer(s) • Answer(s) must be given for full credit • A correct answer equals 1 star punch • Make sure you make the necessary corrections to your paper • CATS are collected each week for a grade

  17. Notebook Checks 35% • Notebook checks will occur half-way and at the end of an unit. • Only certain assignments will be checked • Staying organized is not an option! Every student must keep all unit work in their notebook until the day after the unit test. • Coversheets with the assignments will be given the day prior to the check. • I will accept late notebooks only 1 day late for 20 points off.

  18. Class Work 15% • Class work basically defines itself…it is work that is done in class. Most class work assignments will be checked during a notebook check, while others may be collected the same day.

  19. Homework 15% Completion of homework is vitally important in order to be successful in my class. It provides the necessary on-going practice and refinement of mathematical skills that we have worked on together in class. Homework will be: • Given on a daily basis (with an exception to some holidays and test days) • Checked for completion on a daily basis. I expect 100% effort and completion on homework. For full credit to be given, I must be able to see that the student completed at least 85% of the assignment. • Reviewed the following day in class and students will have the opportunity to make corrections and ask any questions that they may have. For this reason, late homework will NOT be accepted. • Averaged every 2 weeks for one homework grade to go into the grade book.

  20. Homework (continued) • Incomplete Homework Stamp • If a homework assignment is NOT at least 85% completed, then a red “Incomplete Math Homework” stamp will be placed in the student’s agenda inside the day’s parent block. This stamp means that the student received a 0% on their homework assignment for that day. • No Late Homework Accepted • Homework is reviewed the following day in class and students will have the opportunity to make corrections and ask any questions that they may have. *Exception when an assignment is collected…I will accept it only 1 day late for 15 points off. • Lowest homework grade gets dropped • The lowest homework grade is always dropped every 9 weeks. • Cheating on homework is unacceptable! • Both the cheater and the original owner will receive a 0% on the assignment and the parents will be notified.

  21. Quizzes & Tests 30% • Quizzes will be given approximately every 1.5 weeks. • Tests will be given at the end of each unit. • Study guides usually will be provided and reviewed prior to each test. • All quizzes and tests will be passed back and reviewed for any questions. • All quiz and test scores will be recorded in the student’s agenda in the parent block once passed back. • The lowest quiz grade will be dropped every nine weeks. • NO re-takes will be given for any assessment. • Absent students need to make-up quizzes within 2 days and make-up tests within 3 days upon returning to school. (Exceptions to this limit will be made for long-term absent students)

  22. Extra Credit - Odyssey • Go to http://clo.douglas.k12.ga.us/childu/index.html User Name is First name space Middle initial space Last name. Password is your 6 digit lunch number. • At the end of every nine weeks, I will put in an Odyssey grade for any student who spent time on Odyssey completing lessons and assignments. This extra grade may be enough to change your final grade by several points. • Work on Odyssey in Homeroom if you don’t have internet at home.
