  1. CE 496BClass Schedule and Plan April 3, 2012

  2. Action Plan • Finalize Task 1 and Task 2 Reports(Submit to LACDPW in early April) • Task 3 • Select preferred Alternatives (3) • For each Alternative, provide detailed design and summarize results in one Final Report: • Calculations • Drawings • Specifications • Cost Estimates • Project Concept Report (PCR) • Presentation of Final Report on CSULA Eng. Expo

  3. Summary of LACDPW feedback • The project will consist of lining the canal and constructing a cutoff wall • LACDPW provided some alternatives but CSULA will have to make the following decisions: • Injection grouting or slurry trench • Cutoff wall location A or B (see next slide) • Lining canal with reinforced concrete (not shotcrete), or geosynthetic clay liner (GCL)

  4. Cut-off Wall proposed by LACDPW A B

  5. LACDPW Feedback on GCL Things to consider/investigate: • Expect heavy equipment driving through this canal for maintenance • The lining should be rodent proof • An installation guide (http://www.nilex.com/sites/default/files/Geosynthetic_Clay_Liner_Installation.pdf) states that the subgrade “should possess a particle size distribution such that at least 80 percent of the soil is finer than a #60 sieve unless a membrane-laminated GCL (Bentomat CL or Bentomat CLT) is used.”  Verify that our site is suitable.

  6. CSULA Alternatives • Cut-off Walls • Analysis & Configuration of Cut-off Walls: • Injection Grouting • Slurry Wall • Cut-off Wall(s) optimal locations • Under canal • On the west side of the canal • Conveyance Structures • Connecting Basin 1 & Basin 2 • Demolish and remove existing structures between canal and Basin 1 • Lining with reinforced concrete or GCL • Rodent effects on liner
