The Gibeonite Deception • As word spread about the Israelites The kings begin to form alliances to defeat the Hebrews • The Gibeonites chose to another approach • They dressed themselves in worn out clothes and packed their mules with old, rotten food.
The Gibeonites formed a caravan and walked a short distance to Gilgal where Joshua camped • “We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us.” • They said they have because of the Hebrew Lord • Joshua believed them and made a pact with them • After three days Joshua learns that they live close by • Joshua goes to see them…dah, dah, daah
The people tell Joshua they did this because they were afraid of the Israelites and their God • Joshua does not attack because of his oath but instead makes servants to the Israelites
The Day the Sun Stood Still • When the king of Jerusalem learned of the Gibeonites he became afraid • Gibeon was a great city, much greater than Ai, and all of its men were warriors • The five kings of the Amorites: the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon form an alliance and move to attack Gibeon
