  1. Photosynthesis Turning Light into Life

  2. What is Photosynthesis? Autotrophs convert Sunlight  to Chemical Energy

  3. Plants provide: Chemical energy on which all life depends Oxygen – plants created our atmosphere Materials – shelter, clothing, medicine Food – for (almost) all other life form

  4. CO2+ H2O C6H12O6+ O2 • Materials Required for Photosynthesis: • Sunlight – provides energy • Carbon Dioxide – provides carbon • Water – provides electrons • & enzymes to put everything together! • Oxygen is a “waste product” after electrons have been removed from water

  5. Where does photosynthesis take place? http://extension.oregonstate.edu/mg/botany/images/fig12a-small.gif

  6. Leaf Structures • Cuticle & epidermis protect plant • Stomates allow gases in and out • Veins in leaf transport water, nutrients • Xylem - water & minerals up from roots • Phloem - food from leaves to plant

  7. Leaf Structures • Mesophyll = middle leaf • Palisade layer is where most photosynthesis takes place • Cells have many chloroplasts • Spongy mesophyll allows gases to circulate

  8. Narrate this movie!
