  4. Word Structure Line 1 What does the prefix pre- mean? discuss the definition of each word. The prefix pre-means “before.”

  5. Word Structure Line 2 What does the prefix mis- mean? Identify what the prefix –dis means. discuss the definition of each word. Mis- means “wrong” or “bad”. Dis- means “Opposite.”

  6. Word Structure Line 3 What does the suffix –ful mean? Adding the suffix –ful to base words makes them adjectives. What spelling change was necessary when adding the suffix –ful to the word beautiful When the suffix –ment is added to a verb it becomes a noun. enjoy – enjoyment The suffix –ment means “action” or “process.” the word enjoyment means “the action or process of enjoying something. Ful means “to be full of something.” the y changes to i before adding the suffix –ful.

For example: adding –tion to the verb correct makes it the noun correction. the word correction means “the action or process of correcting something.” Were any spelling changes needed when adding –tion to some words? Define each word. The final e was dropped on the base word celebrate before adding the suffix –tion.

Continue for all the words in the word lines. Example: We will celebrate my birthday. Last year’s celebration was great.

  11. Reading This week, bring to class your favorite books or stories. Each day, we’ll have a volunteer read a portion of their story. You might want to practice reading your stories aloud to yourself before you read them to the class.

You might start the discussion by asking why the student chose this story to share. • What was your favorite character or part? • You are not limited to talking about only this book or story. This book or story might remind you of another book you have read, and you may want to compare it to today’s story.
