  1. TOWERS JUNIOR SCHOOL

  2. HOW WE GOT THERE • We display the results of our school travel surveys in attractive ways. This gets all the pupils interested.

  3. We look at what is going wrong and make it public!

  4. The School Travel Team • We make sure that our School Travel Team meets frequently. • We involve pupils, staff, governors and parents. • We make our Junior Road Safety Officers part of the School Travel Team. • We talk to each other and encourage the whole school community to talk to us. If they have a good idea or notice a possible danger they come and and tell us. We like to listen.

  5. A yearly sponsored walk not only raises money for a chosen charity, or for our school, but promotes walking and it is fun.

  6. Assemblies, Classroom and Whole School Activities • Regular assemblies on the School Travel Plan, promoting walking to school and cycling. • Presentations in assemblies by the Junior Road Safety Officers. • Being part of the WOW scheme. • Road Safety Plays, Cycle Training, Yearly ‘Walk to School Week’ Events, Competitions, and Whole School Activities. • A teacher down unexpectedly one afternoon and no lesson plans available! An excellent opportunity to do work on the School Travel Plan. • Graphs and charts in ICT and Maths. Looking at local maps, bus and train routes. Class discussions on safety outside the school gate and on pollution and looking after our planet.

  7. Junior Road Safety Officers • We promote road safety as often as possible. • We run competitions to make the pupils aware of the need for wearing a cycle helmet and how to cross the road safely. • We promote WOW and distribute the badges and information. • We are part of the School Travel Team and help organize the sponsored walks and other School Travel related activities.

  8. How Things Have Changed • By constant monitoring and promoting the School Travel Plan we have changed the number of pupils travelling by car from 87 to 28, and we have changed the number of pupils walking from 83 to 150.

  9. What We Are Doing Now • We include the School Travel Plan wherever and whenever we can. It is part of the School Development Plan and School Prospectus. • We talk about it at Parents’ Meetings. • We continue with everything we have done in the past that has worked well. • We incorporate the School Travel Plan into our Health Week and Eco discussions, so that many different aspects can be addressed e.g. healthy lifestyles, keeping fit, keeping safe, and looking after our planet. • We are constantly looking at new ideas to make our School Travel Plan activities interesting and exciting for the pupils. • KEEP ON ‘MOVING’ and always ‘INCLUDE, INVESTIGATE AND INSPIRE’.

  10. If All Else Fails! • Wear a silly hat, involve important people, and include a prehistoric monster!
