Concentration camp “ The term concentration camp refers to a camp in which people are detained or confined, usually under harsh conditions and without regard to legal norms of arrest and imprisonment that are acceptable in a constitutional democracy.   15. Auschwitz III, also called Buna was a forced labor camp. It was established in October 1942 Prisoners worked for German industries that exploited concentration camp labor.   16. Kapo • Head prisoner in charge of other inmates • Elie’s first Kapo, a young Polish man, showed compassion. What was his fate? • Who was Idek the Kapo?

  17. Kommandos • This is the German word for command. • Name for units of slave laborers in the camps.

  18. Sonderkommando • Forced to help with the Final Solution • Guarded newly arrived inmates • Usually inducted upon arrival- could not resign- work or be killed. • They were prisoners, not SS officers • Task of disposing of corpses.

  19. Rebellion • On October 7, 1944, several hundred prisoners assigned to Crematorium IV at Auschwitz-Birkenau rebelled after learning that they were going to be killed. During the uprising, the prisoners killed three guards and blew up the crematorium and adjacent gas chamber.

  20. The prisoners used explosives smuggled into the camp by Jewish women who had been assigned to forced labor in a nearby armaments factory. The Germans crushed the revolt and killed almost all of the prisoners involved in the rebellion. The Jewish women who had smuggled the explosives into the camp were publicly hanged in early January 1945.

Write a journal that summarizes what you heard. What surprised you? What questions come to mind? How does this connect to what you have read in Night?
