  2. The Turks • Nomadic • Origins were from west of China. • 10th century began converting to Islam and migrating into the Abbasid Empire. • Abbasids bought Turk children to raise as slaves, soldiers and bodyguards. • Abbasids prized the Turks for their loyalty and skill.

  3. Turks • Turkish military slaves (mamelukes) become a powerful force in the Abbasid Empire. • Become more powerful than their masters. • During this time frame the Abbasids were losing territories. • 945 end of Abbasid Empire. • 970 Turkish group called the Seljuks migrated into the Abbasid Empire.

  4. Seljuks • 1000 convert to Sunni Islam. • 1055 attack and capture Baghdad from the Persians. • 1071 at the Battle of Manzikert, the Turks crush the Byzantines. • By 1081 capture most of Anatolia.

  5. Seljuks • Turned to the Persians for support in their conquest of Anatolia. • Persians held high government positions. • Some even served as the vizier or prime minister. • Seljuks admired the Persians for their learning, culture and religious practices. • Persian was the language of the empire.

  6. Persian Influence • Seljuk rulers were called shahs. Shah is the Persian word for king. • Persian art & architecture were supported by Seljuk rulers.

  7. End of the Seljuks • After the death of Malik Shah the Seljuk empire disintegrates. • Attacked by the West in The Crusades. • Pope Urban II launches the 1st Crusades in 1095. • Called for the Turks to be driven out of Anatolia and to capture Jerusalem. • 1099 Jerusalem is captured.

  8. The Crusades • Under Saladin the Muslims were able to recapture Jerusalem in 1187. • Saladin and King Richard I signed a truce giving Jerusalem to the Muslims and Christians pilgrims access to Christian holy places.

  9. Seljuks & the Mongols • The Mongols led by Genghis Khans grandson Hulagu conquered the Abbasids. • The Mongols rule did not last long. • The Ottomans rose from the ashes of the Mongol Empire.
