  2. Birth • John was born on May 10, 1838. • He was born near Bel Air, Maryland.

  3. Family • He was the ninth out of ten children. • His parents were Junius Brutus Booth and Mary Ann Holmes. • His family enjoyed acting.

  4. Childhood • John was a spoiled child, but did not have a good education. • He enjoyed fencing. • He attended school at Bel Air Academy and Milton Boarding School for Boys. • John’s father, Junius, died when John was 14.

  5. Young Adulthood • John decided he wanted to act at age 17. • He joined the Arch Street Theatre and made his stage debut in 1855. • By 1858, he had been in 85 plays.

  6. Adulthood • In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became president. • In 1861, the Civil War began. • John was arrested for treasonous words against the government. • In 1864, Lincoln was re-elected. • John was engaged to Lucy Hale in 1865.

  7. Plans for Lincoln • Booth started a group to kidnap Lincoln. • The group had meetings almost every week. • John’s plan changed.

  8. Assassination of Lincoln • John sneaked into the room Lincoln was in at a play. • At 10 pm, April 14, 1865, Booth shot Lincoln in the head with a .44 caliber Derringer. • Booth jumped onto the stage, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis (Thus always to tyrants),” and broke his leg during escape. • Booth died on April 26, 1865.
