  3. Legal Considerations in Selection • Human rights laws prohibit the use of certain questions as part of the Selection process unless legitimate occupational requirements can be proven.

  4. Ontario Human Rights Code OHRC includes that: • Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to employment without discrimination because of: Race Sex Ancestry Sexual Orientation Place of origin Age Colour Record of offences Ethnic origin Marital status Citizenship Family status Creed Disability

  5. Selection Criteria • The selection criteria should be based on specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other (KSAO’s) related criteria that pertain to the position. • KSAO’s include: judgment, leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills

  6. During the Interview: • Listen for subjective decision making qualities • Ask for as many details and specifics as possible • Ask candidates for their thoughts or feelings about a situation to gain further insight

  9. What did we learn? • Consistent and fair approach for each candidate • Open ended questions provided more in depth knowledge of our candidates • Allowed the Selection Committee to factor all aspects into the decision making process

  10. The Outcome? • Selection Committee reached consensus without hesitation • Immediate agreement on the preferred candidate • Defendable decision rather than subjective choice

  11. The Result?? Selection Committee was able to leave on a Saturday afternoon within 5 minutes of concluding candidate interviews!!
