  2. Reformation • Alexander II restructures Russian society after there defeat in the Crimean War • He abolishes serfdom in 1861 and earns himself the title of Tsar Liberator • Reorganizes the local government and the judicial system • Lowered the service period in the military to 15 years

  3. Revolt in Poland • Polish revolutionaries attempt to overthrow the government in 1863 but are foiled by the military • Poland is later Russified and is considered a Russian territory from then on

  4. Revolutionaries • Young Russians create the Populist movement in 1870 • Sought to social revolution for the Russian peasants
