  2. 1920’s to now… In recent years, through diverse forms of media and publications, an increased focus has been placed on the physical attributes of female athletes. This focus has , in many instances, detracted from the sporting performances and abilities of female athletes.

  3. Continued… • In the Beginning: Woollen box pleat tunics – shirts were cotton and collared below the knee, woollen stockings. • In 1930’s: Blouses, pleated tunic, matching bloomers and sports shoes. • Mid 1930’s to late 1960’s: tunics were shortened, socks instead of stockings and materials were finer and lighter. • Early 1970’s: Tunics were replaced by skirts and polo shirts. Bibs were introduced to identify a players position. • 1970’s to mid 1990’s: shirts were made of light cotton knit and followed the trends; skin tight (70’s), looser (80’s) and oversized (90’s). • Mid 1990’s: 1993-1995 body suits were introduced, bibs were modified to have Velcro or press studs. • Today: body suits are made out of lycra that is light and durable. Skirt length shortened to below the butt.

  4. Portrayal & Sexploitation • Woman were stereotyped by their physical traits, their clothes, their emotions and there relationships and men by their aggression, courage and toughness. The question of what is really being promoted through publications such as the types of uniforms they wear is, woman as sex object? Or woman as athlete? Woman athletes are portrayed as being desirable, attractive and feminine; The fact that they wear dresses while playing the sport shows that they are being portrayed in this way.

  5. Continued... • For most of the past 100 years woman have struggled to be recognised for their achievements and contributions not for how attractive they may be or what they are wearing. • Sportswomen now demand to be taken seriously as athletes and have fought hard for media coverage that doesn’t concentrate on superficial issues, such as; looks and attire. • Woman athletes are portrayed as being desirable, attractive and feminine; The fact that they wear dresses while playing the sport shows that they are being portrayed in this way.

  6. Pride and province • “It wasn’t only for us here, it was for the whole of New Zealand. We had such a lot of best wishes from all over New Zealand so it was a pretty big game if you look at it that way” – Irene Van Dyk.
