Energy is the ability to do work.

Energy causes countless actions and reactions to occur every day.

Types of Energy

We will focus on eight types of energy.

kinetic energy
Kinetic Energy

Energy in use or motion.

Energy due to movement.

potential energy
Potential Energy

Stored energy.

Energy due to how high it is off the ground and how much gravity could pull on it.

heat energy
Heat Energy

A measure of how much atoms are moving.

light energy
Light Energy

Causes things to be luminous (lit up).

sound energy
Sound Energy

Sound is produced by a vibrating object.

Waves of molecules

hitting each other

(like dominos)

electrical energy
Electrical Energy

Electrons flow in a current.

chemical energy
Chemical Energy

Energy stored in a molecule that can be released with a chemical reaction.

elastic energy
Elastic Energy

Stored energy when something is stretched or deformed.

  • A woman is jogging.
  • You listen to a piano.
  • You put on sunglasses because the sun is bright.
  • A boulder sits precariously on the edge of a cliff.
  • You are ready to shoot a sling shot.
  • Your hands are hot after you rub them together.
  • You get zapped by static.
  • You eat a Snickers.

What is Thermodynamics?

Thermodynamics is the study of how energy changes from one form to another.

1 st law of thermodynamics
1st Law of Thermodynamics

Energy can change forms but can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, there are always equal amounts of energy going into and out of a system.

Sometimes called conservation of energy.

Ex: motor, human body, slap hand on table

2 nd law of thermodynamics
2nd Law of Thermodynamics

Energy always flows from a high concentration to a low concentrations.

Or, heat always flows from hot to cold.

Also, energy becomes more random and useless as time goes on. (Entropy)

Energy eventually changes into useless heat.

  • If 100 units of energy go into an engine, predict how many units should come out.
  • If that engine is run on chemical energy (gas), what forms of energy do you predict it will change into?
  • When you eat food, what form did the energy start in and what forms did it end up as?
try it yourself
Try it yourself.

At home, first identify 3 types of energy and record it.

Next observe energy changing forms at least once. What type of energy did it start out as and what types did it end up as?

This paper is due tomorrow.
