  2. Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 4–1) Main Idea Example 1: Find a Compatible Dividend Example 2: Find a Compatible Divisor Example 3: Use Rounding and CompatibleNumbers Example 4: Estimate to Solve Problems Lesson Menu

  3. I will estimate quotients using rounding and compatible numbers. Main Idea/Vocabulary

  4. Find a Compatible Dividend Estimate 145 ÷ 2. 145 ÷ 2 Change 145 to 140 because 14 and 2 are compatible numbers. 140 ÷ 2 Divide mentally. 140÷ 2 = 70 Answer: So, 145 ÷ 2 is about 70. Example 1

  5. A B C D Estimate 215 ÷ 3. • about 55 • about 60 • about 65 • about 70 Example 1

  6. Find a Compatible Divisor Estimate 3,500 ÷ 80. 3,500 ÷ 80 Change 80 to 70 because 35 and 7 are compatible numbers. 3,500 ÷ 70 Divide mentally. 3,500÷ 70 = 50 Answer: So, 3,500 ÷ 80 is about 50. Example 2

  7. A B C D Estimate 4,800 ÷ 50. • about 60 • about 70 • about 80 • about 90 Example 2

  8. Using Rounding and Compatible Numbers Estimate 439 ÷ 52. Step 1 Round the divisor to the nearest ten. 439 ÷ 52 439 ÷ 50 Step 2 Change the dividend to a number that is compatible with 5. Notice it is easy to divide 45 by 5. 439 ÷ 52 450÷ 50 Example 3

  9. Using Rounding and Compatible Numbers 450 ÷ 50 = 9 Step 3 Divide mentally. Answer: So, 439 ÷ 52 is about 9. Example 3

  10. A B C D Estimate 629 ÷ 68. • about 9 • about 8 • about 7 • about 6 Example 3

  11. Estimate to Solve Problems Five students share 18 small pieces of veggie pizza equally. About how many pieces does each student get? Example 4

  12. Use compatible numbers 6 and 18. Use compatible numbers 20 and 5. One Way: Another Way: Estimate to Solve Problems 18 ÷ 5 18 ÷ 5 ÷ 6 = 3 ÷ 5= 4 18 20 Answer:So, each student eats about 3 or 4 slices of veggie pizza. Example 4

  13. A B C D Four friends share 18 pieces of candy equally. About how many pieces does each student get? • about 3 or 4 pieces of candy • about 4 or 5 pieces of candy • about 5 or 6 pieces of candy • about 7 pieces of candy Example 4
