Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant Purpose Title IV-Part A, The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, is to support programs To prevent violence in and around schools To prevent the illegal use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco by young people To foster a safe and drug-free learning environment that supports academic achievement.

  3. SEED Support, Education, Encouragement, Dedication • Consists of 5 main components • Prevention • Parent and Community Connection • Engagement • Treatment • Conflict Resolution

  4. Prevention • Early Screenings and education • Assemblies to provide education • Alcohol and drug use • Tobacco • Violence • And more • Educational groups

  5. Parent/ Community Involvement • Families • Bi-monthly educational family workshop nights • Linkage to community resources • Parent involvement in Schnee activities and wellness activities through the YMCA

  6. Parent/ Community Involvement • Community • Schnee Watch Program • Partnership with Ivy Park • Neighborhood volunteers • Student volunteers • Community Partners • YMCA • Hy-Hopes for Hunger – Green House • AmeriCorps- Green House/Nutrition volunteers

Engagement • Activities offered to increase student positive outlook in school • Unique enrichment activities offered before/after school • Help students meet state-mandate hours requirements • 6.25 hours per week outside the 4-hour school day • Choice of extra block or employment/volunteer • Block 2 for pm students • Block 3 for am students • Will sign up for choices tomorrow • Potential to earn additional credits

Potential Offerings • Intramural sports • Hands-on learning activities • Green house operations • Volunteer opportunities • Scholarships for enrichment activities such as dance, art classes, sports participation • Utilization of YMCA classes and facilities • Yoga, Kick Boxing, Spinning, Zoomba, Rock Wall

  9. Potential Offerings This grant is for your benefit If you have any suggestions about potential offerings, please share them with staff!

  10. Treatment • Community Health Center and Child Guidance & Family Solutions trained counselors • On-site assessment services • Treatment of Alcohol and Drug related issues • Treatment of social, emotional, and behavioral health issues • No cost to you or your families

  11. Conflict Resolution • Small group assemblies & staff professional development pertaining to at-risk culture • Discrimination • Bullying • Harassment • Conflict resolution/ mediation services • Any student disciplined for inappropriate interpersonal conduct will be mandated to attend a conflict resolution workshop or develop a positive social skills plan with counselor/staff.

Youth Risk Behavior Surveys Pilot • Schnee is 1 of 10 Ohio schools to collect youth risk behaviors data • Data will be used to better design our SEED program • to provide a coordinated system of supports for students • Surveys will be given Wednesday during elective time • Surveys are 100% anonymous

Youth Risk Behaviors Survey • Monitors data across 6 areas • Behaviors that contribute to violence or unintentional injuries • Tobacco use • Alcohol and other drug use • Sexual risk behaviors • Unhealthy dietary behaviors • Physical inactivity • Again all data given is anonymous • Important to give honest responses • Will better assist in program development and implementation

  14. SEED Roll Out • Some YMCA programming will begin next week • Monday, Wednesday, Friday • Community Open House, September 7 • Big SEED Kickoff, September 29, 2011 • The first family workshop night, October 11, 2011

Happy, Healthy, and Well! • Students who attend Schnee are often facing many intense stressors • Stressors interfere with consistent academic performance • SEED is focused on reducing non-academic barriers • To improve school climate & academic success • SEED will help provide you with healthy recreational activities • Exciting enrichment activities • Increase access to treatment if needed • At Schnee we care about you as a person!! • We want to help you succeed!
