  2. Founding • SidharthaGuatama • Born as prince in 624 b.c. in Lumbini • Was apart of northern India • Now apart of Nepal • Early years of life lived as prince in the royal palace

  3. Enlightenment • He retired to a life in the forest • He followed a life of meditation • He attained enlightenment • Toughtothers the path to enlightenment • Taught the First Wheel of Dharma • Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and others • are the principal source of the Hinayana

  4. Teachings • Second and third Wheels of Dharma • The Perfection of Wisdom Sutras • the Sutra Discriminating the Intention • The main source of the Mahayana • Mahayana = how to attain enlightenment • Hinayana • explains how to attain liberation from suffering

  5. Four Noble Truths • There are also the four noble truths • Human life has a lot of suffering • The cause of suffering is greed. • There is an end to suffering • The way to end suffering is to follow the Middle Path.

  6. Holy Texts • Tripitaka- one of the earliest teachings of Buddha • Tripitaka means 3 baskets • Originally written in the language Pali canon

  7. Celebrations • Buddhist new year • Vesak • MaghaPuja Day

  8. Main Beliefs • There are three universal truths • Everything in life is impermanent • Possessing things doesn't make you happy • “Self" is a collection of changing characteristics
