  3. What Do Buddhists Believe in? Continued • Buddhist teachings called the “Dharma” • No self satisfaction or self torture = Nirvana • Nirvana = Healthy body, not starved/overfed. • To live is to suffer • The cause of suffering is desire • Stop suffering = live moderately

  5. How Do Buddhists Practice Their Religion? • Give up money • Avoid Desires • Meditate for hours a day • Take a bow of celibacy • Overcome the fear of death • Try to live a moderate life.

What kind of clothing do Buddhists wear? • Normal Buddhists= normal clothing • Monks/ nuns= robes (meditation clothing) • Orange robe= Theravada school • Dark red robes= Zen& pure land Buddhists • Western Buddhists order= dress in ordinary clothes - so no one thinks they are diff. • White robes= Trainee monks - Reminds them simplicity of monastic life

  11. what are there holidays ? • April = Hamamatsu which is Buddha's birth day • July = dharama guru • November = sangha day • May =Buddha day buddha birthday • February = losartibeaten new year • The Buddhist festival most important in the countries.

What are there religious symbols ? • The lotus flower is the symbol of purity and can be any colure but blue • Dharamachakra is the symbol of the weel of law and the eight spokes represents the Nobel eightfold path • Stupa represents symbolic grave monument were relics of a holy monk are kept. Also symbolizes the universe • Triratana represents the Buddha the dharama and the sangha • Chatra represents all protection against evil. • Dhvaja represents the Buddha's teaching. • The deer represents the first sermon of the Buddha witch was held in the deer part of benares • Naga represents the vestige of pre Buddhist firtility rituals and protector of the Buddha and the dharama

Buddhist religious text= Trip taka • Trip taka= 3 kind of the sacred scriptures of Buddhism. <Trip taka> also= ‘3 baskets’ <Trip taka> 1st basket= teachings of the Buddha. <Trip taka> 2nd basket= the discipline for the Sangha. <Trip taka> 3rd basket= special teaching. What religious text does Buddhism follow?
