  5. Introduction

  6. Behold the cross displayed, whereon the saviour of the world did hang. O come, let us worship and bow down. We are come together that we may hear again how our Lord and Saviour suffered on the Cross and that hearing we may offer our lives anew to Him who died for us.

  7. Let us Pray Lord, have mercy upon us Christ, have mercy upon us Lord, have mercy upon us

  8. Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us.

  9. And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

  10. Assist us mercifully with Your Spirit, O Lord, that thinking upon the Cross and Passion we may worship You with thankful hearts. Amen O Saviour of the world, who by Your Cross and precious Blood have redeemed us: Save us and help us we humbly beseech You, O Lord.

  11. Hymn 112 ‘There is a Redeemer’

  12. 1 There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God's own Son, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.

  13. Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

  14. 2 Jesus my Redeemer, name above all names, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, O for sinners slain.

  15. Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

  16. 3 When I stand in glory I will see His face, and there I'll serve my King forever in that holy place.

  17. Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done. Melody Green based on Isaiah 47: 4; Acts 1: 8; Philippians 2: 9; Revelation 22: 3-4

  18. The Cross Is Foretold Reading: Isaiah 53:3-8 (NIV)

  19. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

  20. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

  21. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

  22. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  23. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

  24. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

  25. We adore you, O Christ and we bless You: Because of Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

  26. Hymn 227 ‘Man of sorrows! What a name’

  27. 1 Man of sorrows! What a name for the Son of God, who came ruined sinners to reclaim: Alleluia! What a Saviour!

  28. 2 Mocked by insults harsh and crude, in my place condemned he stood; sealed my pardon with his blood: Alleluia! What a Saviour!

  29. 3 Guilty, helpless, lost were we: blameless Lamb of God was he, sacrificed to set us free: Alleluia! What a Saviour!

  30. 4 He was lifted up to die: ‘It is finished’ was his cry; now in heaven exalted high: Alleluia! What a Saviour!

  31. 5 When he comes, our glorious king, all his ransomed home to bring; then again this song we’ll sing: Alleluia! What a Saviour! Philipp P. Bliss (1838-1876) based on Isaiah 53: 3.

  32. Jesus Is Betrayed Reading: Mark 14: 32-50 (NIV)

  33. 32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."

  34. 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

  35. 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?

  36. 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." 39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

  37. 41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!” .

  38. 43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard."

  39. 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.  48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?

  40. 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

  41. We adore you, O Christ and we bless You: Because of Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

  42. ‘In Christ Alone’

  43. Jesus is Tried Before the Jewish High Priest Reading: Matthew 26: 57-68 (NIV)

  44. 57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

  45. 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.    Finally two came forward 61and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

  46. 62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."

  47. 64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

  48. 66What do you think?"       "He is worthy of death," they answered. 67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"

  49. We adore you, O Christ and we bless You: Because of Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.
