  1. The Effect that the Fall of Rome and Constantinople had on Greek Classical Education. (What happened to education when the scholars moved?)

  2. 1. Imagine you are a scholar, architect, civil servant or engineer living in Rome in 425 AD. What would you do? Would you move out of Rome? If so, where might you go if you wanted to continue you way of life? If you said CONSTANTINOPLE, you’d be RIGHT!! “Constantinople in 400 AD was flourishing, with wealth from the eastern trade routes. Here they were still carrying on the building of the empire. And the best was yet to come when Justinian ran the show. There was plenty of work for engineers to build roads, bridges etc, and other scholars to work and to teach.”

  3. Did this have much of an effect ? Western Europe spent the next 800 years (400 -1200 ad) in what has become known as the “dark ages.” With no one to teach, people became illiterate. There were no advancements in arts and sciences for 800 years!! The Byzantine Empire in the east, however “preserved” these Greek studies of math, astronomy, philosophy, etc. and continued to flourish for another 1000 years! People were educated and they continued to make advancements. Scholars

  4. 2. What about the year 1450 AD. The Byzantine Empire has been reduced to only the city of Constantinople. Now, where might you go? If you said back to Italy/Western Europe you’d be RIGHT! In the 1200’s Western Europe was just starting to trade again. People started making money and could afford teachers/scholars/engineers/artists again. So, the scholars from the Byzantine Empire moved to the good Christian West (although Roman Catholic), rather than live under Muslim rule. Did this have any effect?

  5. Did this have much of an effect ? Western Europe benefitted greatly from the addition of these scholars! Greek ideas of math and science came back to Europe and lifted them out of the “dark ages.” This time of the flourishing of the arts, sciences and philosophy was so important for Western Europe that it was given its own name. The “Renaissance”- Which means “Re-birth” The Renaissance was from around 1200’s ad – 1600’s and was greatly influenced by the return of scholars to the West. Scholars
