  1. Fermilab E906 Schedule Paul E. Reimer 20 June 2008

  2. E906/Drell-Yan History: • 1997: Completion of E866/NuSea. • 2001: Approved by Fermilab PAC —scheduling deferred until other fixed target experiments could also be ready to run. • 2005-06: Scheme to run E906/Drell-Yan with minimal impact on Neutrino production developed. No need for major fixed target run. • 2006: Fermilab PAC re-endorses wisdom of 2001 PAC. • 2007: DOE/Nuclear Physics begins funding spectrometer upgrade • 2007: Fermilab estimates cost (to Fermilab) to stage E906 at $1.5M in M&S plus manpower. Requests collaboration obtains additional funding to cover the M&S cost. • 2007-08: Additional institutes join collaboration (from Japan and Taiwan), taking responsibility for some of Fermilab’s tasks, and expect to provide additional money to Fermilab for E906/Drell-Yan infrastructure. • 2008: Spectrometer redesign promises reduces cost, savings in DOE/Nuclear Physics money may be transferred to Fermilab. Paul E. Reimer E906 Schedule

  3. Future Time Line Caveat:The crystal ball is murky. • July (early) 2008: Fermilab cost estimate complete • July (early) 2008: Geometry finalized • significant input from this meeting and follow up • July (late) 2008: Draft MOU circulated • August 2008 (early): MOU finalized • Fall 2008 to Spring 2009: Magnet and upstream beam line installation • Includes preparation of KTeV Hall for our use • Designed to give us access to KTeV Hall by Summer 2009 when significant student labor may be available. • Summer 2009: Spectrometer installation • January 2010: Start of run. • This is the earliest possible time • Fermilab is planning for a “long” shutdown in 2012, but not yet scheduled. We would like to be done by then. Caveat:This schedule has not been vetted with Fermilab. I have directly asked the question of when we might run, subject to funding scenario’s and expect an answer next week. Paul E. Reimer E906 Schedule

  4. Critical Path • Collaboration and Fermilab agreement on MOU (memorandum of understanding) • Must be finalized to spend (and obtain additional) DOE/Nuclear Physics Money and will outline our responsibilities. Collaboration • Station 1 MWPC design and fabrication • received DOE permission to spend design money • Station 3 Drift chamber design and fabrication • DAQ system • Station 3 and 4 Hodoscopes Fermilab • Beam line construction • Upstream must be phased with Tevatron downtime • Hall Preparation • Magnet Assembly Needed for our access to KTeV hall Paul E. Reimer E906 Schedule

  5. Realistic Schedule I need your input on • Resources that are needed for each task • $$$ Money is limited and availability corresponds to fiscal year boundries • Labor • Equipment (e.g. phototubes for hodoscopes, Fermilab wire winding facilities, DAQ) • Time estimates for each task • Task coordinator I will roll this information into a Gantt chart (MS Project) Paul E. Reimer E906 Schedule

  6. J-PARC Experiment Runs Expt. Funded Experiment Construction Fermilab MOU Publications 12 09 08 11 10 Funding • We have $400k which can be spent now • Possibility for some additional money in FY08 (now) • Additional funds in FY09 (but this could be limited by a continuing resolution which limits funds to DOE/NP) • Funds in FY10? (we would like to be done by then!!) • Money from Japan (RIKEN) for common infrastructure is likely not available before April 2009. Conclusion • We have a plan to get E906/Drell-Yan running! • Time may be tight • If we wait, money may slip away • Contributions and efforts from our new collaborators can make this happen! Paul E.
