  1. E906 Closeout 12/11/06

  2. Science • Experiment needs to be done • ubar/dbar at high x essential for understanding the basic science of the nucleon • Also important input for the interpretation of proton colliders and RHIC experiments. • (note: CTEQ considers putting more weight on E866 than nuFe data)

  3. Collaboration • Strong collaboration with experience in this area. • All major areas appear to be covered.

  4. Design • Experiment design based on successful previous apparatus. • No major technical risk in new equipment which is all based on well understood technology. • Significant concern about status of old equipment planned for reuse. • Recommendation – move quickly to evaluate the status of all recycled equipment to ensure the availability of adequate working channels with spares. • Need to study FERA->VME interface to evaluate the usefulness of the old electronics.

  5. Cost is a problem • We believe the base cost on new equipment (magnet, station 1, hodoscopes) is reasonable. (Formal contigency is low, but cost estimates appear to contain contingency. Need to handle this divide consistently.) • Recommendation: We would like to see more detail on the budgets/contingency for our report.) • But the status of the existing equipment has not been carefully evaluated and the costs and contingency on that part of the proposal are too small. • Recommendation: Quickly evaluate the status of the equipment to provide a more justifiable contingency.

  6. Fermilab • Fermilab has evaluated the cost of providing substantial support including space, beam, assembly, safety. • a MOU between Fermilab and the collaboration needs to be negotiated before Stage2 Fermilab approval.

  7. Beam • Beam spill characteristics are very important for the data rates and efficiencies. • The beam parameters need to be specified. • Studies of the beam structure and performance of the proposed beamline should be done as quickly as possible as inputs into the final trigger/readout design and run plan.

  8. Need a real management plan • Identified L2 managers for all subsystems including liason to Fermilab. • Reporting system with quarterly reports • Who owns the contingency – need a fixed procedure for dealing with it. • MOU’s with institutions

  9. Conclusions • Need clearer management plan • Need quick evaluation of status of the recyclable components • Need more detail/consistency in cost/contingency estimates • Need to do this physics!

  10. Notes from the closeout • We finalize in mid January • We would like the management plan by then. • We need FTE estimates (hrs and source of funding) and more purchasing details on the station 1 and hodoscope projects which are definitely part of the big project.
