  33. 5TH amendment • (5TH-8TH Due Process – government must treat people fairly) • Miranda Warning – must be informed of rights • Double Jeopardy – can’t be tried for the same crime twice • Eminent Domain – government can take private property, for public use, for a fair price • Grand Jury – determine if there is enough evidence to take someone to trial • Pleading the 5th – right not to testify against oneself

  36. 6th-8th Amendments • 6th Amendment - right to a speedy, public, and fair trial by a jury • 7th Amendment – permits jury trial over money and property • 8th Amendment – prohibits cruel and unusual punishment

  37. 9th-10th Amendments • 9th Amendment – Not all rights are included in the Constitution (ex. Voting) • 10th Amendment – powers not given to the national government, are given to the states

  40. 5 Features of a Summary • Include the name of the author and the title of the article. • What are the 3 main points • Always paraphrase! • Never use your own ideas or opinions • Be sure to have an introductory sentence, a body, and a conclusion.

  41. Assignment • Write a 5-7 sentence summary on the article. • Write a brief explanation about how you feel about the topic. Be as specific as possible.

Summary • In the article, With new Congress comes a new push for gun laws, by Athena Jones the author discusses the new rise in gun bills as a result of the Sandy Hooke Elementary School shooting. Congresspersons who have introduced new legislation include Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, Rep. Steve Stockman, Rep. Thomas Massie, and Senator Diane Feinstein. This is a very controversial issue and many members of Congress are supported by the NRA. In addition, Republicans and Democrats are very divided on gun control. Jones questions will this Congress be willing and able to make changes related to gun regulations.
