  3. Road to War • Hitler: • Invades Austria 1938 • Wants Sudetenland • France, Britain and Germany meet and agree on the Munich Pact 1938 • Gives Hitler his “Last territorial demand in Europe” • “Peace with honor, peace in our time” - Neville Chamberlain (British Prime Minister)

Hitler Moves Across Europe • Hitler’s Blitzkrieg strategy helped him take control of: • Denmark , Norway- April 1940 • Low Countries – Through Belgium into France - May 1940 • French and British retreat from Dunkirk saves 340,000 • Hitler takes Paris June 1940 • Controls most of the country • Vichy France

Arsenal of Democracy Speech - FDR 1940 • “I want to make it clear that it is the purpose of the nation to build now with all possible speed every machine, every arsenal, every factory that we need to manufacture our defense material. We have the men, the skill, the wealth, and above all, the will. We must be the great arsenal of democracy. For us this (Hitler’s actions) is an emergency as serious as war itself. We must apply ourselves to our task with the same determination…sense of urgency…and patriotism and sacrifice as we would if we were at war”
